Obama: dopo le ultime tragedie delle armi, la solidarietà non basta

Ci siamo trovati insieme come nazione troppe volte a piangere dopo orribili atti di violenza provocata dalle armi. E in questo momento, la solidarietà non basta. Dobbiamo riconoscere che c’è altro lavoro da fare – che queste tragedie sono diventati “normali”. Dobbiamo parlarne tra la gente, e gli attivisti come voi sono quelli che devono farlo per primi.

Persone in tutto il paese stanno impegnandosi, sostenitori dell’OFA (Organizing for Action, ndr) e volontari sono al lavoro per prevenire la violenza delle armi da parte dello stato e – città per città – c’è chi si unisce oggi a questa campagna. Mentre cerchiamo di guarire da quest’ultima tragedia, dobbiamo chiederci cosa possiamo fare come individui e comunità per prevenire che le armi cadano nelle mani di individui pericolosi.

La mancanza di decisioni nel Congresso su questo tema è incredibilmente frustrante. Ma il loro rifiuto di agire non fermerà questa campagna. Grazie ad attivisti come voi, Stati come Washington e Oregon hanno introdotto restrizioni efficaci sugli acquisti di armi, semplicemente basandosi sull’esperienza di quanto accaduto.

Nessuna singola riforma basta da sola a eliminare la violenza. Ma non possiamo rinunciare; o tragedie come queste diventeranno una sorta di nuova normalità. Dobbiamo fare progressi dove possiamo, OFA e altri gruppi hanno un vero e proprio impegno da portare a termine.

The lack of movement in Congress on this issue is incredibly frustrating. But their refusal to act won’t stop progress. Because of organizers like you, states like Washington and Oregon have introduced successful restrictions on gun purchases, like common-sense background checks.

No single reform will eliminate violence. But we can’t give up, or act like this is some kind of new normal. We have to make progress where we can, and OFA and other groups have a real path forward.
